Where the neck would be (and closest point where the river is on each side) is a tunnel. Run through that tunnel (comming from the south, so running north). On the other side of the tunnel is a perfect base location for all required things. Or in the tunnel itself if your on singleplayer. Best part is, you can get there quite easily (some spiders, like 3 or 4 over the whole trip, but getting a bow first is an option and then that's really no issue) very early on. I forewent building an initial base and just survived a bit until I had a stone sword and shield, then went for it, and succeeded.

I've seen priests and dancers spawn in small camps and large camps with nothing but combat thralls.
