Simple mail transfer protocol, post office protocol and Internet message access protocol are technologies used to send and receive emails. These services can be enabled in Microsoft Exchange to enable users to access their mailboxes from an email client. Microsoft Outlook is often used in tandem with Microsoft Exchange, but sometimes small businesses don't have Office installed on all workstations due to limitations in product licensing. You can, however, use Live Mail instead of Outlook to access your mailbox.
